The Walter Winchell Show (1950’s)

It’s  fifteen minutes of Walter reading news and gossip items. On this show from 1953 he did an editorial about cigarettes and lung cancer. He says he’s on the side of scientists who say there is a relationship between constant smoking and the disease. Between each item he hits a morse code sound effect. There were two commercials for Gruen watches. One featured actor Sterling Hayden and other actress Teresa Wright.

This was a simulcast of his weekly radio show. His opening line was, “Good evening Mr. and Mrs. North and South America and all the ships at sea…let’s go to press!”

When he tried to revive the show in 1960 it bombed. His opening line no longer meant anything to the public. He did achieve success as the narrator of “The Untouchables” (1959-1963).

About vintage45

I'm a big fan of vintage books, movies,TV shows and music. I encourage everyone to patronize your local used book/record store and pick up some of the good stuff. My posts are capsule reviews of some favorites that you may want to investigate. The albums posted aren't really reviews but items from my collection that are still available. I try and point out highlights of each one and let the music speak for itself. Thanks to all for checking out the blog.
