The opener of the long running series. This is a true pro at work. Pronzini is prolific but never short changes his readers. He doesn’t churn out quickies. I’ve read almost everything he’s written from series to stand alones to short stories. He is a favorite who never disappoints.
In the opener, a nine year old boy is kidnapped. The ransom has to be delivered by a third party. The boy’s father wants Nameless to be the go between. Things go wrong. At the drop he hears a loud noise. He finds the body of a murdered man. Now he has to find the murderer and the boy.
I like to read series in order and that’s a good idea with this one considering all the changes in the life of Nameless throughout the books. 1988’s “Shackles” is a pivotal book in the series. So far there are thirty-four novels and three short story collections. The latest release is “Zigzag:A Nameless Detective Collection” (2016).
