Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man (1943)

Fifth in the Universal series finds Larry Talbot looking for help from Dr.Frankenstein. Bela Lugosi is the monster and Lon Chaney.Jr.reprises his role as the wolf man. Also in the cast Ilona Massey, Lionel Atwill, Dennis Hoey and Maria Ouspenskaya. Screenplay by Curt Siodmak.

Talbot escapes from his crypt thanks to a couple thieves. A Constable discovers his body in town. He has a head injury and is taken to an asylum and operated on.

He wakes up and there’s Dr.Frank Mannering (Patric Knowles) and Inspector Owen (Dennis Hoey). Talbot tells them he’s a murderer. They don’t believe him. He tells them to look up an old gypsy woman named Maleva (Maria Ouspenskaya).

That night the moon is full and he goes out the window and kills a constable. The next morning he goes nuts and is put into a straitjacket. That won’t hold him and goes to a gypsy camp and finds Maleva. She says she knows of a doctor that can cure him….Dr.Frankenstein.

They head for Vasaria. Along the way the moon is full and he kills again. In the village they get the cold shoulder and are told Frankenstein is dead. Later there’s another murder and then the howling of a wolf. The villagers run down Talbot and he escapes into the ruins of Frankenstein’s castle.

Maleva is arrested and taken to the town jail. In the ruins Talbot carves The Monster (Bela Lugosi) out of the ice. They’re pals. The owner of the Inn is a trouble maker. The Mayor (Lionel Atwill) tries to keep everyone calm.

Calling himself Taylor, Talbot asks the Mayor to find Elsa Frankenstein (Ilona Massey). He says he wants to buy her father’s land. What he really wants is his secret diary. He comes clean with her and she’s not too thrilled with him but they go to the town’s new wine celebration.

Talbot causes trouble and in walks The Monster. Talbot gets him out of there. Mannering and Elsa go to the castle. Elsa shows Mannering where the diary is hidden. Mannering says he’ll destroy the monster once and for all. Talbot says he wants to die because he’s tired of the curse on him. What will Mannering do?

The title may make it sound like a cheapie but it is a good entry in the series. Maria Ouspenskaya reprises her role from 1941’s “The Wolf Man.” This movie was followed by 1944’s “House Of Frankenstein” with Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr., J.Carrol Naish, John Carradine, Lionel Atwill, George Zucco and Elena Verdugo.

Dennis Hoey is well known as Inspector Lastrade in the Sherlock Holmes series with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
