Fourteen stores from 1992. Very surprised at how weak the entries chosen by Max Allan Collins and Donald E.Westlake turned out. They’ve done better in their sleep. Favorites:

“Mother Darkness”-Ed Gorman – Alison Cage works for the welfare department. Her job is income verification. That means catching cheats. Meanwhile two babies have died which may be attributed to SIDS, There is some suspicion that the deaths were murder.

“The Problem Of The Leather Man” – Edward D.Hoch – Legend has it that a man dressed in tattered leather used to walk a route that took him thirty-four days to complete three hundred and sixty-five miles. Now it looks like he’s back. A man avoiding an auto accident says he had to swerve to avoid him. A local doctor spotted the leather man walking and joined him. It was too late to return to his car so they stayed at a B & B. The next day the driver died and everyone says the doctor was by himself…no leather man.

“You May See A Strangler” – Peter Lovesey – A woman gets a call from a friend she hasn’t seen in almost eleven years. During the conversation the woman brings up the murders of several women in the area. One of the friends thinks her husband may be the serial killer.

“A Will Is A Way” – Steven Saylor – Mystery set in ancient Rome featuring Gordianus The Finder. A man tells him he was called into a house to witness the final will of a dying young man. The next day he saw him alive and well.

Other authors: Doug Allyn, Jo Bannister, Jacklyn Butler, Max Allan Collins, Susan B.Kelly, Joyce Carol Oates, Nancy Pickard, Ruth Rendell, Benjamin M.Schutz and Donald E.Westlake.

About vintage45

I'm a big fan of vintage books, movies,TV shows and music. I encourage everyone to patronize your local used book/record store and pick up some of the good stuff. My posts are capsule reviews of some favorites that you may want to investigate. The albums posted aren't really reviews but items from my collection that are still available. I try and point out highlights of each one and let the music speak for itself. Thanks to all for checking out the blog.
