Rogue Dragon-Avram Davidson (1965)

First of two books about the Kar-chee. The other was “The Kar-Chee Reign” (1966).  The title says Dragon but this isn’t about Knights, Sorcerers or magic. It takes place on Earth in the far future where dragons are hunted for sport by outworlders.

The Kar-Chee invaded Earth and left it almost in ruins. Most of the population settled other worlds and Earth is called Prime World. A hunting party from M.M.beta arrives to take down some dragons. Overseeing the hunt is Jon-Joras. It’s all to give his king some fun.

The dragons have a X marked on their bodies. That’s the killing spot. The upper class on the planet are called Gentlemen. Below them are the Doghunters and then there are the Nomads.

During the confusion caused by a dragon Jon-Joras ends up a prisoner of the Doghunters or Free Farmers in an old Kar-Chee castle. They mark baby dragons with the X but in the wrong place. They train them to attack and are known as rogue dragons.

Jon-Jorus’ adventures lead him to a tribe of Nomad Poets. They go to another city and are captured and tossed in jail. Jon-Jorus is sentenced to die. He gets help in escaping but winds up in the woods about to be dragon meat. He manages to avoid the beast and then spots a grounded flyer and takes off.

He heads for a remote area known as The Bosky where he makes some discoveries that explain a lot about what’s going on and the possibility of a revolution.

This book is a lot of fun as you follow Jon-Joras through one perilous situation after another leading to a good ending. The word dragon usually turns me off but this was well worth it. Good escapism.

I'm a big fan of vintage books, movies,TV shows and music. I encourage everyone to patronize your local used book/record store and pick up some of the good stuff. My posts are capsule reviews of some favorites that you may want to investigate. The albums posted aren't really reviews but items from my collection that are still available. I try and point out highlights of each one and let the music speak for itself. Thanks to all for checking out the blog.

THat is one of the crappiest dragon covers ever… I haven’t read and of Davidson’s works yet — I have heard of him though and have multiple of his novels on my to read list.

The mid 60’s era of Ace singles all seemed to have crappy covers.
